Villanova gives annual Cardelli award
Greg McGlone ‘03
On
April 11, Villanova’s Astronomy department presented senior Lisa
Winter with the 2003 Dr. Jason Cardelli Memorial Award for undergraduate
research. The annual award was established in 1996 in honor of Dr. Jason
Cardelli, an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova
University, who died suddenly in May of that same year.
The Cardelli Award is given to an upperclassman who demonstrates outstanding
ability to work creatively and independently in astrophysics research.
This includes participating in a significant number of projects and having
the results published in peer review journals during the student’s
time at Villanova. Winter is an astrophysics and Honors major. She was
a NASA Undergraduate Fellow with MIT last summer currently holds the national
Goldwater Undergraduate Fellowship.
Following the award ceremony, guest speaker Dr. Charles Alcock, theoretical
physics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, gave a lecture titled,
“Where does the Solar System End?”
