Villanova
University’s Center for Economic Education and EconomicsPennsylvania
hosted the annual Southeast Regional Citizen Bee Competition in Bartley
Hall on April 5. Thirty-three students from 10 southeast Pennsylvania
high schools competed in the event. The high schools competing were
Abington, Central Bucks West, Chichester, Governor Mifflin, Great Valley,
Marple Newtown, Penncrest, Strath Haven, Unionville, and Upper Darby.
The contest consisted of both oral and written components. For the oral
component, there were four separate categories in four rounds. The categories
were history: conflict and cooperation, geography: basic geographic
literacy, government: how government works, and economics: Market influences
of governments.
The Southeast Regional Citizen Bee is sponsored by Villanova University,
EconomicsPennsylvania, and the Delaware County Press Club. The first
place winner collected $500 donated by the National Penn Bank; second
place received $300 donated by EconomicsPennsylvania; and third place
was awarded $200 donated by the Delaware County Press Club.
“We were very pleased to sponsor the Southeast Region Competition.
This was the largest representation in the 5 years that the College
of Commerce and Finance at Villanova has hosted. This is another important
community outreach of the economics department, the College and the
University,” said Dr. John Coughlan, professor of economics.
