The honor society of Phi Kappa Phi
inducts students and faculty
Holly Stratts
The
Villanova chapter of Phi Kappa Phi held its 29th annual induction of undergraduate
and graduate students and faculty members on April 13. The primary objective
of the honor society is the recognition and promotion of superior scholarship
in all fields of higher education.
The honor society invites undergraduate students who have senior status
and are scholastically in the upper 10 percent of their class and those
who have junior status and are scholastically in the upper 7 ½
percent of their class.
Graduate students are nominated by the department chair of their discipline.
Faculty members who have demonstrated scholarly distinction are also considered.
This year the chapter inducted 128 members.
The Villanova chapter also participates in an annual national Graduate
Fellowship competition. This year, senior Kerri Whittemore, a biology
and sociology major, was awarded an $8,000 national fellowship for graduate
study and a $750 chapter award.
Dr. James W. Arrison, assistant professor of physics and out-going chapter
president said, “In an era when our students are confronted with
so many non-academic issues, it is refreshing to be a part of a society
that both recognizes and honors academic excellence. After all, that is
ultimately why we are all here at Villanova.”
Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary honor society
and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, founded
in 1925.
