Blueprints - May 2003 Edition
Successfully writing for publication
Kevin Maher ’04

On May 2 and 3, for a 28th consecutive year, Villanova will offer “How to Write for Publication Successfully”, a workshop/seminar designed for potential authors and experienced writers, under the direction of Wm. Ray Heitzmann, Ph.D.

Goals of the program include encouraging participants to consider personal and/or professional growth through writing for publications as well as providing participants with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to successfully submit a manuscript for publication.

Through the completion of the seminar, participants should be able to send a review to a journal, magazine or newspaper, distinguish between types of articles, understand the value of sending a query to an editor and obtaining a manuscript style sheet, as well as list the titles of several journals and newsletters that publish “their type” of article. Other objectives include being equipped to send a manuscript to a journal or newsletter for publication, to explain the steps to follow prior to sending a manuscript to an editor and to establish a working relationship with an editor.

Guest speakers will include past workshop graduates Frank Henninger, director of the Villanova Bookstore, Dr. Beverly Kahn, assistant professor of education and human services and Dr. Fred Savitz, professor of education at Neumann College.
The workshop is offered on both a credit and non-credit basis and is conducted in an informal setting where participants can learn in a positive environment. The seminar is opened to both novices as well as experiences writers and authors.
