Villanova Magazine - Fall 2003 Edition
University President and Student presented at Installation of New Archbishop
W. Graham Rumble

On Tuesday, October 7, in a ceremony with more than 1600 guests, His Excellency Archbishop Justin Francis Rigali was installed as the twelfth Bishop and the eighth Archbishop of Philadelphia at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Archbishop Justin Rigali succeeds His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua as the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

The Rite of Installation began when the apostolic letter from Pope John Paul II was read before the congregation. When Archbishop Rigali was handed the crozier, or his shepherd’s staff, he officially became the Archbishop of Philadelphia. After the installation rite, Archbishop Rigali was individually congratulated by the clergy, religious and laity representing the people from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as well as leaders of academic institutions and civic officials.

The Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., president of Villanova University and Laura O’Brien ’04 A&S, were introduced to Archbishop Rigali by Auxiliary Bishop Robert Mc Ginnis. O’Brien was asked to accompany Father Dobbin to greet Archbishop Rigali at the altar representing the students of Villanova University. Laura is a Theology major with an Ethics concentration, and was selected by the Office of Campus Ministry, where she works part time, to attend the Mass and installation rite.

After the installation, the ceremony continued with the Liturgy of the Word, and Archbishop Rigali gave his homily, greeting the audience in six languages including Spanish, Russian, Lithuanian, Chinese and Korean, as well as English. He remarked, “The idea was to greet you,” as the audience applauded his efforts. Following his homily and Holy Communion, the Mass concluded with the new Archbishop leading the entourage through the main doors of the Cathedral as the audience applauded.

Within weeks, at a Consistory, in Rome, Archbishop Justin Francis Rigali will be named a Cardinal by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II.
