Students join fight for Good Schools
By Kevin Maher ’04

Attributing much of their own academic success to strong elementary and high school experiences, Villanova University students sought to ensure a similar opportunity for Pennsylvania students through the founding of the Villanova University Chapter of Good Schools Pennsylvania this past fall.
Their goal is to close the $210,850 gap between the wealthiest and poorest classrooms in Pennsylvania, by achieving adequate and equitable funding across the state. Other goals incorporate increasing the availability of proven methods to improve school outcomes as well as laying the foundations for a system of accountability for educators.

The addition of the Villanova chapter makes 31 campuses statewide in addition to the many community and Church groups that exist. Campus chapters work together in planning monthly events intended to raise awareness about educational justice and gain the attention of government officials. Techniques include petitioning, telethons and lectures. A highlight event will be Gov. Rendell’s Special Session on Education Funding Reform; the date has yet to be set. With 1.8 million students enrolled in Pennsylvania’s public schools, progress gained will have far-reaching effects.
