Villanova
engineers take mission trip to Honduras

This spring marked the Civil and Environmental Engineering
department’s fourth trip to Honduras, as they completed the design
of a chapel and volunteer center for orphaned boys. From March 2 to 8,
a group of 13, including 20 undergraduates, worked to complete this project
that combined the work of their capstone course in structural design with
a commitment to service.
After successfully completing the construction of a 25-foot tall concrete
cross at the Amigos de Jesus orphanage in 2000, Professors David W. Dinehart
and Shawn P. Gross of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department
decided to continue the involvement. They returned in the spring of 2001
and 2002 to begin work on a structure that would serve as a chapel and
volunteer center. This spring’s trip focused on the construction
of roof support for the Catholic orphanage.
The course objectives for this capstone program allow junior and senior
civil engineering majors the ability to apply their education in the practice
of structural engineering. In addition, their participation allows young
Honduran boys the opportunity to develop in a loving environment where
they will receive a formal education.
