Villanova Alumni Gather for Palm Beach Event
Leadership Gifts Committee hosts weekend-long outing
By Tom Wirth

The Leadership Gifts Committee for The Campaign for Villanova sponsored a weekend getaway February 6-8 in Palm Beach, FL, offering a short respite for Villanova alumni and their guests from the frigid temperatures and snow that leveled the Main Line area during the winter months.

In an effort to fortify relationships among donors and build recurring momentum for The Campaign, the Leadership Gifts Committee organized the Florida event to further reinforce the connection between the University and many of its key supporters. “Gatherings such as this one play an essential role in the life of The Campaign,” noted John M. Elizandro, vice president for Institutional Advancement. “The Palm Beach outing represents a culmination of what is truly great about Villanova. It provides a unique opportunity for our many important alumni and friends to get together in a casual setting and to strengthen their bond with the University.”

Serving as hosts for the occasion, James C. Curvey, ’57 and his wife Shirley opened the festivities Thursday evening, February 7, with an introductory dinner at The Breakers Hotel located in the heart of Palm Beach. Curvey fulfills various functions within the larger structure of The Campaign, acting as co-chairman of the Leadership Gifts Committee, as a Steering Committee member, and as vice chairman for The Campaign. “We are really pleased to have so many alumni and friends who could take time out of their busy schedules to join us here in Palm Beach,” remarked Curvey. “It is important that we renew our commitment to the institution in various ways, and as loyal patrons, this event is just one way that we accomplish that.”

Taking advantage of the beautiful weather on Friday, February 7, guests took part in a round of golf at the Jupiter Hills Golf Club. But the highlight of the weekend came the following evening, February 8, as alumni watched the Villanova men’s basketball team take on the University of Miami at the Miami Convocation Center. In a memorable Big East match-up, the Wildcats prevailed 72-67, earning a thrilling overtime victory.

In addition to Curvey, many prominent alumni were in attendance for the different activities throughout the weekend. Also joining in on the fun were Villanova president Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., ’58, Leadership Gifts Committee co-chairman and vice chairman for The Campaign for Villanova William B. Finneran, ’63, Herbert F. Aspbury, ’67, Rocco A Barbieri, ’59, Robert M. Birmingham, ’66, William M. Gibson, ’66, Gary M. Holloway, ’76, Arthur J. Kania, Esq., ’56, Richard J. Naclerio, ’54, Felix Petrillo, Jr., ’61, Michael Picotte, ’69, John J. Quindlen, ’54, and Frank S. Scarpa, ’56.

“To know that we have so many people willing to go the extra mile to support the University and its priorities is of immeasurable value to the Villanova community,” commented Fr. Dobbin. “We are truly lucky to have such a wide network of individuals who are dedicated to the future success of Villanova, and we are quite honored to have them participate in activities such as this one in Palm Beach.”
