A 1914 Wedding Present Will Now Welcome Villanova Brides
By Kevin Maher ‘04

Already host to many successful business conferences on the Eastern seaboard and from around the country, the Villanova Conference Center, plans to open its estate to the wider Villanova community, especially Villanova alumni, by introducing wedding receptions to the Montrose Mansion.

Originally built in 1914 by Mr. John Riley as a wedding present to his daughter, Mrs. Barnes Townsend, the Mansion will now act as a wedding reception venue. The estate, once known simply as “Montrose,” consists of terraced views of 34 acres of woodland, a 58-room hotel and a glass-walled dining room. With the nine bedroom mansion, stables and walled acres of flower, vegetable and rock gardens, lawns, hills and spring fed lake, the luxurious aura serves as a true testament to the Main Line culture and affluence of its era.

According to Dan Walker, director of Food and Beverage, Montrose will be available for only one wedding on a Saturday each weekend. This will enable the Center to give a celebration its exclusive attention, more importantly though, it allows the Center to remain true to its primary objective, education. Besides the Executive MBA program, the Conference Center extends its resources to many other organizations.

Well equipped to handle a party of 100 to 250 people, the staff includes a maitre d’, catering manager and executive chef offering committed service. Less than a mile from the University and conveniently located within close proximity to I-476, I-76, Philadelphia and Philadelphia International Airport, the Conference Center also offers well-appointed guestrooms for overnight stays. Guests can enjoy the grounds of the estate, as well as the bar, parlors and library of the Montrose Mansion.
