$1 Million Scholarship Fund
Benefits High School, College Alma Maters of James C. Curvey ‘57
With a commitment of $1
Million to support The Campaign for Villanova, James C. Curvey ’57 C&F, a
University Trustee, has established a scholarship fund that benefits students
from his hometown of Mahanoy City, PA who enroll at Villanova.
“We are extremely pleased
that Jim has made this commitment,” remarked Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A. ’58,
University president. “It will have a long-lasting, positive impact on the
lives of so many young people and will help Villanova provide additional
financial aid resources to deserving students.”
During the University’s
previous campaign, Curvey committed funds that provided one student from Mahanoy
Area High School with a partial scholarship to attend Villanova. With his latest
commitment of $1 Million to support The Campaign for Villanova, Curvey has
ensured that more Mahanoy Area students – one each year – will receive
scholarship support to attend the University. These increased scholarship
resources will make the University a more attractive destination for students
from Mahanoy Area High School who have demonstrated both academic achievement
and financial need. The school is home to 400 students and is located in
Mahanoy City, PA, approximately 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
This endowed scholarship fund was publicly announced in
June at Mahanoy Area High School’s graduation ceremonies. Curvey was the
honored alumnus and delivered the commencement address.
“It’s really good to be able to give something back to
Mahanoy City and to Villanova,” said Curvey, vice chairman of Fidelity
Investments, as part of his remarks. “This town, this high school and Villanova
have certainly given a lot to me.”
“Jim’s generous commitment will provide great new
opportunities for Mahanoy Area students to pursue their education at Villanova,”
commented John Murtin, superintendent, Mahanoy Area School District. “This
endowed scholarship fund will provide a lasting legacy in Jim’s name, linking
his educational experiences with future Villanova students from Mahanoy City.”
During the quiet phase, period of preliminary Campaign
planning and solicitation, the University appoints alumni, parents and friends
to volunteer leadership positions. Curvey currently serves as Vice Chairman for
The Campaign for Villanova and Co-Chairman of The Leadership Gifts Committee.
In these key roles, Curvey will help to define fundraising parameters, confirm
funding objectives and solicit commitments at all levels to support Villanova’s
strategic priorities.
“Jim has made a
significant personal investment of time and resources as one of Villanova’s
leading alumni,” Gerald S.J. Cassidy, Esq. ’63, Chairman of The Campaign for
Villanova. “His leadership signifies his belief in the University’s strategic
priorities and this scholarship commitment helps create early momentum for our
fundraising efforts.”
