Theatre Takes a Bow with Three Barrymore Awards

The
2002 Barrymore Award winners were announced on Oct. 7 at the eighth annual
Barrymore Award Ceremony at the Zellerbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center.
The Villanova Theatre department received a total of 9 nominations this
year for Excellence in Theatre from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia
and claimed 3 awards, all for its spring production of the musical Chicago.
For this season, 106 shows produced by 32 different theatre companies
were chosen to be reviewed for awards. The final selections were made
by a panel of 16 judges, who ranged from theatre professionals and educators
to audience members.
Theatre department chairperson, Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A. received the
Harold Prince Award for Outstanding Direction. He was previously nominated
for his direction of Villanova’s productions of Children of Eden,
Into the Woods, and Evita.
Awards were also given to two graduate theatre students, Charlotte Cloe
Fox for Outstanding Leading Actress and Mike Dees for Outstanding Supporting
Actor. Fox has received her M.A. in theatre from Villanova and has appeared
in six of the department’s productions. This was Dees’ second
performance with the Villanova Theatre department, where he is currently
pursuing his M.A.
Other nominations included Outstanding Overall Production, Darren Lenz
for Outstanding Leading Actor, Cheryl Mazzarini for Outstanding Supporting
Actress, Janus Stefanowicz for Outstanding Costume Design, Myra Bazell
for Outstanding Choreography, and Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical.
